Nepal Floods Were So Bad: Why Every Life Now Needs a Chance
Homes Were Lost. Lives Were Shattered.
There are moments when words seem inadequate in the face of a tragedy, such as the recent Nepal Floods, where entire neighborhoods disappeared into the mud within hours. Roads were washed away and entire families had to be rescued by rescue teams, who walked through flooded streets in orange vests, while thousands of other people watched their properties, personal belongings, and in the saddest of cases, their loved ones, swept away by the current.
Rescue personnel walked through waist-deep waters to reach stranded families and boats with rescuers navigated completely flooded roadways that minutes ago accommodated houses and shops. Behind every one of these rescue efforts was a race against time, and in disasters, such as this one, it is often the deciding factor between life and death.
At Shanti MediEquip, we watched these events unfold with heavy hearts. We are fully aware that it is not a story that one can scroll past, for it is a story that reminds us how fragile life is, as well as the importance of having the right medical equipment on hand as soon as possible after such a disaster occurs.
Now, Every Life Needs a Chance
As the torrential rains subside, the emergency may change, but it certainly does not cease. The immediate danger of drowning changes to a lengthier emergency, such as treating the injured, preventing disease outbreaks and ensuring that survivors are able to survive in makeshift shelters, with no electricity and no clean water and no accessible hospital.
At this time, a First Aid Box can mean the difference between a minor wound becoming a serious infection and the wound healing properly. A patient monitor can mean the difference between the early detection of a change in a patient’s condition and the detection occurring too late to intervene. A stretcher can mean the difference between a survivor being carried to the nearest hospital and the survivor having to be carried on the backs of rescuers through the mud.
The above are just a few reasons why Medical Equipment is indispensable during such a time: for the rescue and recovery efforts, for the injured, for the ill, for every single life that may still have a chance to live.
The Equipment That Matters Most in a Crisis Like This
When disaster relief personnel and local hospitals scramble to manage a flood of this scale, some of the most indispensable pieces of Medical Equipment include:
First aid boxes and emergency cabinets. Wall-mounted first aid cabinets enable easy stock access, so that rescue workers and relief camp staff do not have to spend a second searching for the right inventory. This is especially useful in the chaos of a relief camp. Having a first aid cabinet, fully stocked and easily-accessible, will allow for a minute or two less spent searching for the correct inventory.
Emergency stretchers. When a road is inaccessible to any vehicles and all the rescue personnel can do is walk through flooded roads and uneven, dangerous terrain, a reliable stretcher is one of the most valuable pieces of equipment at one’s disposal.
Patient Monitors. In field hospitals and relief camps, a patient monitor is an invaluable tool for checking the vitals of a patient, so that a medical professional can prioritize which patients require more urgent care. A reliable and portable patient monitor, that does not have to be in a fully-equipped hospital, can help immensely during such a time.
Suction and respiratory support units. Survivors who have been rescued from the floodwaters will need suction devices and respiratory support. Portable suction devices and respiratory support machines, that do not rely on a steady power supply, are a godsend in the first few hours and days of a disaster.
Mobility aids and recliner chairs. In the wake of a disaster, the elderly, the injured and the sick will require mobility aids and recliner chairs. Folding wheelchairs and medical recliner chairs provide a much-needed comfort and opportunity to rest while waiting for more treatment or more help to arrive.
Sanitization stands and hygiene stations. The flooded waters often carry disease and bacteria. Making sure that the families that have been moved to relief camps and the patients that have been treated in field hospitals do not contract a waterborne illness is an extremely important part of a disaster response. Simple hygiene stations at a relief camp or a field hospital can help prevent a second wave of illnesses from occurring.
Complaint and suggestion boxes. As much as one would think that a disaster relief camp would be a time of peace and comfort, it is, in fact, a time of strain and hardship. Making sure that there is a mechanism in place for the camp residents and patients to bring their concerns to the attention of relief personnel can help identify unmet needs in a disaster relief context.
Each of the above, while seemingly simple, is an essential part of what keeps a disaster from becoming an even bigger tragedy. They are the unglamorous pieces of equipment that rescue personnel reach for when their shift begins at midnight in the pouring rain, when there is no time to spare to reach inside a cabinet to look for the right inventory.
Reliable Medical Equipment When It Matters Most
There is a world of difference between medical equipment that looks good in a hospital showroom and medical equipment that is durable enough to withstand the rigors of a disaster relief camp. This is the kind of medical equipment that we manufacture at Shanti MediEquip. We believe that it is our responsibility, not only to provide medical equipment that meets specifications, but to provide medical equipment that can be relied upon when it matters most: in a relief camp in a flood-affected village, in a field hospital that does not have a steady power supply, and in the hands of a rescue worker who has had to walk miles through the mud to rescue a survivor.
We believe that supporting disaster relief efforts is not a separate entity of our work. It is the motivation behind our work. Our work exists because of the lives that can still be saved.
Our Hearts Go Out to Every Family Who Has Lost Their Loved Ones
Behind every number from this disaster is a name. A parent, whose child is still missing. A community, that mourns for its neighbors who could not be saved. The homes that will never be rebuilt in exactly the same way. The lives that will live in the shadow of this tragedy for the rest of their years.
To each of the families who have lost a loved one in these floods, we express our deepest condolences. There is no way to undo what has happened, and there is no piece of equipment that can restore what has been lost. But we can, and will, continue supporting the rescue workers, medical teams and relief personnel who work tirelessly to try and give those who survived, every possible chance at life. May all the precious souls who lost their lives in this tragedy find peace. Our hearts go out to the families of those who lost their lives in this tragedy during this unimaginably difficult time.
For Every Life That Can Still Be Saved
Disasters like the Nepal floods show, in the starkest of ways, what matters most: clean water, shelter, and the ability to provide medical care to the injured. They also show that preparation is just as important as action. Hospitals, NGOs and relief personnel in areas prone to flooding and other disasters, need reliable equipment before the next disaster occurs, not equipment that they have to scramble to find once the floodwaters are already rising.
At Shanti MediEquip, we are committed to manufacturing medical equipment for a healthier tomorrow. Medical equipment that is not only suitable for everyday medical practice, but medical equipment that can be relied upon in life-saving endeavors. Whether it is a first aid cabinet in a relief camp, a stretcher that has been carried through flooded roads and a patient monitor that has been keeping watch over a survivor’s vitals through the night, we believe that reliable equipment is an essential part of supporting rescue and relief personnel in their efforts.
If you are a disaster relief personnel or a part of a relief camp, we invite you to contact Shanti MediEquip to learn more about how we can support your work.
